It’s the third year since the Newcastle Univerity’s Beach Party was revived and this year they’re aiming to prove once again that live music sounds much better with sand between your toes!
THE BEACH PARTY 2008!
Here’s the first announcement of acts to hit the sandy shores of the Newcastle University Beach Party!
If any act epitomizes the carefree party atmosphere that The Beach Party stands for it’s Bondi boys THE BEAUTIFUL GIRLS. Having managed to avoid the Australian winter touring solidly by way of promoting their album Ziggurats to legions of fans across Europe and North America in recent months (including slots on festivals in Canada, the US, Germany, & the UK) these prodigal sons return home to continue their quest for an eternal summer – and what better way to do that than to kickoff their homecoming with a headline spot on the sand at The Beach Party.
Also exploding onto the bill is one of Australia’s most exciting young bands –THE GETAWAY PLAN. The band created a storm after their single ‘Where the City Meets the Sea’ hit the airwaves earlier this year. After selling out almost every show on their national ‘Other Voices, Other Rooms’ album tour, including a sell-out in Newcastle where an estimated 150 fans were tuned away, the boys are ready to create a sandstorm for all the lucky beachgoers who may have missed out last time.
Melbourne band LITTLE RED built a word of mouth following that has steadily developed to a resonant roar and has ultimately led them to becoming one of the darlings of Triple J. Their recent Newcastle show pumped up punters with a cut to the chase, hands in the air, dance like no one is watching sort of affair. They are a celebration of palpable joy. Just try to stop smiling when the fireside sing-a-long starts for Little Red on the beach.
Having performed on the Unified Tour with Bliss n Eso earlier this year, FUNKOARS committed the cardinal sin of consistently out performing the headline act. Being part of the same Adelaide crew that spawned the Hilltop Hoods, Funkoars were already proven performers in hip-hop circles attaining cult-like support with their outrageous lyrics and explosive live shows, they are forever cemented in the upper echelons of Australian Hip-Hop.
Starting the year on the Big Day Out tour, psychedelic reggae rockers ROGERTHAT have since been based in Berlin as they launched an aural assault on Europe. But the Gold Coast originals have missed the sun and sand and are pumped to grab the boardies out of the cupboard and kick up the sand to welcome in the warmth of summer with their upbeat party vibe.
Adding local flavour on the lineup are Newcastle boys HERE COME THE BIRDS. After releasing their debut EP this year, the band took out the Tooheys Extra Dry Uncharted competition and won the chance to rock out at the Splendour in the Grass Festival with the likes of Vampire Weekend and the Wombats.
What a way to kick off summer with some amazing Australian music at The Beach Party 2008. But that’s not all because there are more outstanding acts to be announced very soon on both the outdoor stages and the indoor Bar on the Hill ‘Surfclub’.
In addition to the brilliant music on show, the famous Lost Thong Scavenger Hunt will be on again with 100 prizes to be won. On top of that the Jim Beam on Campus Girls will be running party games and keeping the punters thoroughly entertained.
With outstanding music on multiple stages, summer sun shining and 120 tonnes of sand between the toes in a unique festival atmosphere, a party, on the sand, under the trees sounds like the perfect way to welcome the summer months!
So wax down the boards, break out the bikinis & boardshorts – The Beach Party 2008 is going to be massive!
