★ Learning to travel lightly (Mat’s bag packing challenge)

by Mat on February 21, 2010

O

ne thing all this travel I’ve been doing lately has taught me is that it’s such a pain in the ass standing around a baggage carousel waiting for your luggage to come out from the belly of the plane you just got off of…..not to mention that pretty well every time I’ve flown lately my bag has been one of the last off the plane.

Bearing this in mind, particularly the last bit, I’ve decided to try and travel with just carry on luggage. This isn’t likely to work for any trips longer than a week, or for overseas trips longer than 2-3 days, but it should be really easy in Australia.

Our company has a corporate account with Quest Apartments and whenever possible we stay in Quest properties in Australia and New Zealand. Pretty well all Quest apartments have washing machines and dryers in them, and this little fact should make the carry on luggage plan work brilliantly.

This week I’m in Melbourne, and staying in a Quest property, so this week I’ve only packed 2 shirts, 2 pairs of pants, 2 pairs of socks, and 2 pairs of jocks……plus my walking gear so I can get some exercise, and was able to pack it all in a small rolling bag that I could take on the flight with me.

It was brilliant getting off of the plane and just walking straight out to the taxi rank without that boring, crowded, wait around the baggage carousel.

I’m hoping I can travel like this all the time!

It certainly is liberating to travel without checked in luggage! A few years back i frequented the Newcastle/ Melb flights and learnt quickly about what i could live without.
Good luck!

Thanks Ellen, here’s hoping it works out well as it certainly makes the trip between Newcastle and Melbourne a lot easier, more so when you’re heading back into Newcastle as the baggage guys there have too many jobs and are often really slow at loading the carousel.
