★ Getting started with Omnifocus

by Mat on March 10, 2010

I’ve just started using Omnifocus to organise and manage all the little projects, tasks, and things I do so I thought I’d share a few thoughts about the app from the first 24 hours of using it.

Omnifocus looks & feels complicated

For a while now I’ve been half-heartedly using Things for task management. It’s nice and simple, without all the contexts, perspectives, and other bits and pieces that seem to clog up Omnifocus. That said I think Things is possibly a little too simple when it comes to more complicated tasks that have multiple steps and stages before they can be completed.

I’ve got a syncing feeling

I like the multiple sync options in Omnifocus. I have an iMac at home, I use a MacBook at work, and I carry an iPhone with me everywhere I go. Being able to sync using both Bonjour and Mobile Me makes it really simple to keep all my tasks and projects up to date whether I’m at home, at work, or on the road.

At this point in time I’m not sure whether I will stick with Omnifocus or just go back to using Things, both have pluses and minuses but at the end of the day whichever application allows me to manage all my tasks and projects easiest will win out. I’ll let you know which way I decide to go.

Pretty interested to see how you go with this, actually. I’m constantly trying out to-do or small project mgmt apps and just can’t seem to stick with any of them for various reasons: interface, implementation of syncing, forgetfulness… A solution needs to address all of these problems for me (especially the last one).

I used both Things and Omnifocus a couple of years ago. I’m sure they’ve vastly improved since then – thanks for being the guinea pig.

As part of the test I’ve decided to run both Things and Omnifocus side by side, including their iPhone versions, to really compare the two..

I’ve also spent a bit of time today watching both apps’ training videos, Omnifocus has better videos but I think they’re needed because it’s a significantly more complicated app. Things pretty well only has one video, and it actually helped me ‘get’ the application a bit better and has shown me a couple of different features I wasn’t using.

So far, and partially because I’m not a power user, I’m leaning toward the simpler approach that Things takes.
