ince this morning’s iPad announcement / reveal by Apple I’ve been seeing all sorts of ‘wah wah wah it’s really not that great a device’ from supposed tech experts. Lots of stupid opinion that the device isn’t really that good, and there’s nothing new, etc.
Whingers all of them!
Let’s be very clear here, Apple has never built a killer portable device. iPod’s were alright, but there was nothing brilliant and new about the device itself. They came to a market that was already being serviced by numerous other electronics makers that weren’t really having much success.
So what made the iPod so successful, iTunes….it’s that simple.
No other manufacturer out there created such an easy to use application that could handle all your digital music for you. Apple was ahead of the market and hell, the company itself was saved from doom because of the iPod / iTunes combination.
The same thing will be true of the iPad, though Apple is entering the market at a significantly better financial position and reputation so that will also help.
Apple’s iPad success will not come because of the device itself, again like the iPod it’s quite good looking however it’s nothing really that new and revolutionary……but it will be successful because of iTunes, the App Store, and the entire ecosystem that surrounds it.
Apple’s launching the iPad with the experience that the iPod, and to a lesser extent the iPhone, has given them and you watch them dominate this space.
