New portfolio images
Cross post from Mathew Packer Photography
This morning I’ve added a couple more images into my portfolio. The above image was a triptych I put together from one of my ’sideline’ captures from the studio christening.
I didn’t manage to get into the studio over the weekend, however I’m in the process of booking a shoot for this week as well as another next Sunday. Actually next Sunday’s shoot should be a lot of fun, I’ve got the boys from Cigars For The Man coming in for some promotional shots for their upcoming ep release. Hopefully I should get some great images form the shoot so expect some more additions to this portfolio soon.
Cross Post - Studio Christening
This is a cross post from my photography blog.
Over the weekend I opened up my new studio space to a group of local photographers who I know through Newcastle & Hunter Valley Portrait Group on flickr. Basically this was a christening of the studio, as well as a great networking opportunity so I was very happy that we had a few guys and girls turn up to shoot.
Modeling wise we had Joellen and Lauren, who are actually sisters, who I had met on Model Mayhem. Both girls were great to work with and I’m sure all of the photographers would love to work with them again in the future.
The photographers who came along were Tim Boehm, Andy Gock, Naomi and Alexa. Andy has a number of images up in his flickr stream now if you’d like to check out the happenings, I’m sure Tim and the others will have their own up shortly so I’ll edit in some links at the end of this blog once they do.
I didn’t do much in the way of shooting, preferring to play assistant, video guy, light stand, reflector stand, and a few other odd jobs to help everything keep running smoothly. I also shot the above ‘behind the scenes’ photos as well as a bit of video showing how everyone was working.
Hopefully we’ll start doing this regularly, if you’re interested in getting involved and you’re not a flickr member then introduce yourself in the comments section below and I’ll get back to you, make sure you leave your email address as well!
MPM Studios, nearly done!
Well after a solid amount of work over the past weekend I’ve just about got the studio setup completed. I managed to finish off the painting of all the walls, and pulling all the carpet up. Big thanks to Tim for helping ‘dispose’ of the carpet.
In the below photo is right near the front door of the studio, down toward the far end is the main shooting area, and there will also be a desk, sink and vanity, and a bookcase
The following photo is the main shooting area. The wall is around 10ft high so it’s well out of frame for portrait work, the width of the are is around 12ft, and the depth is about 20ft I think. Plenty of area to work in from head shots to full length portraits. Apart from cleaning the floor up some more all that is left to do is to hang the blockout roman blind on the side window.
And this following photo is looking back toward the entrance. As you can see you have another white wall and corner, this particular wall straight ahead is quite textured, and another coloured and textured wall on the right. There’s plenty of natural light, but you can also shut the blinds and use strobes without having to worry too much about colour balancing and all that.
Oh, and there’s also a load of carpet off-cuts and rugs going on the floor over the concrete.
The final bits and pieces of work should be finished up this week and after that the studio will be open for hire by other photographers and I’ll also be shooting out of here as much as possible.
Anyway the studio hire rates are pretty good at $50 for up to 4 hours, so if you’re interested in finding out more information email at mathew.packer@gmail.com
And another done, Mathew Packer Photography
Managed to finish off another website today, seems to be the flavour of the week. I wanted a really clean, uncluttered setup for my portfolio and I think I’ve achieved it with the new Mathew Packer Photography website.
Let me know what you think.
Spending most of the weekend in the studio, Cath’s away so I’m all on my lonesome. If you’re in Newcastle and you fancy a spot of modeling then leave me a comment.
Have a good weekend.
Matt
Weekend Photos
Here’s a couple of photos from the weekend just been, figured I might actually start posting a few more photos on here seeing as I am actually shooting a bit at the moment.
These were all shot yesterday afternoon just before the storms hit Newcastle. They’re just of Cath and I hanging out, I was filming the storm front coming through for another flickr video (coming later tonight)..

Canon 8800f Scanner
Over the weekend I bought a new film scanner, the Canon 8800f. It’s pretty awesome so far and to give it a test I dug through the cupboards at home and into my ‘archive’ of film negatives, slides, and medium format positives and negatives, and started scanning a bunch of stuff into Aperture.
I was pretty happy with the quality of the scan, specially considering that my ‘archive’ is just a cardboard box and most of the negs were just thrown into the box about 10 or so years ago. Bit by bit over the next few weeks I’m going to clean and scan the lot in an effort to digitise my library.
Here’s a couple of quickly thrown together photos from ‘back in the day’ that I’ve uploaded to my photography website Mathew Packer Photography.
Both photos were shot at Mona Vale on the northern beaches of Sydney, and the skater is Adam Luxford. Hopefully I’ll get more slides and what not scanned in tonight

Mathew Packer Photography update
Over the weekend, between scanning film, I also managed to get a load of updates done on my Mathew Packer Photography website.
About a month or so ago I scrapped the Wordpress installation in favour of Pixel Post which I found a lot easier to use just as a photography website, I didn’t want to blog with it or anything else like that. So finally after just using one of the default themes for the past month I finally pulled my finger out and customised it to display what I wanted.

As you can see from the above screen capture I wanted to display a single photo on the front page, and I didn’t want to stuff around with fancy graphics and logos, I wanted the photos to speak for themselves. I think I’ve achieved that.
While you can click on the photo on the front page and begin to move backwards through my archive, based on date uploaded, you can also ‘Browse By Genre’ which gives you the following display with a drop down menu.

And last but not least is the Biography page, there’s not a lot of information on there at the moment but I’ll have it completed tonight or tomorrow, and if time allows I’ll even throw up a mug shot of myself on there.

So as you can see, it’s a very simple setup with a really simple interface, but I feel like it represents my photography in a much better light than previously.
If you want to go check it all out you can do so at either www.mathewpackerphotography.com or www.mpimagery.com
Cheers, Matt
