Thunder bolt and lightning, very very frightning

There was an absolute cracker of an electrical storm that rolled through Newcastle tonight. It went on for a good two hours, in fact it's still flashing out there occasionally now at 11:45 pm.

Here's a couple of photos shot from the comfort of my sun room, well out of the rain and all that lovely weather. These were all 30 second exposures, f/8.0, and shot on my Canon 5D with the 15mm f/2.8 fisheye on it..

Nice work!! Lightning is always a challenge and you've got some great shots here :) In fact you took more on one shoot than I've managed to get in my entire life! Good work :)

Very nice! I was wishing I had a fisheye during the storm because I wasn't sure where the lightning was going to come from.

30s exposure makes sense too. I had mine on bulb at f/9 (I think). I got one good shot. It turns out that my remote wireless trigger doesn't do bulb :(

Anywho, all good fun, and no power outage!

Actually ended up with about 20 photos in all, it was just one of those nights where it just kept on flashing in front of me.

@kristarella - best thing I've found is to set you exposure to like f/8 or f/11, ISO 100 / 200, and probably 20-30 seconds on your shutter. When I cant be bothered with the remote I use the self timer , set at 2 sec I think, and that way I'm not introducing any camera shake from depressing the shutter.

Yup, sounds like a good place to start. It's probably what many of my shots turned out to be, approximately. Wasn't sure though and didn't want to miss the storm! Next time I'll know ;)

I was glad to get one shot though. For a while I thought the only way to catch lightning was with a light trigger.
