Epic garage rock for fans of The Band, Nick Cave, The Drones, Dylan, My Morning Jacket, Neil Young and Wilco. Roving Cannibals, a fugitive de facto and a sparrow or two. Talk about a rogue’s gallery. Not to mention lost ghosts, drunken ship captains and an estranged stock broker. They’re just some of the misfits that inhabit Brown Bird, the new album by Brisbane’s best kept secret Mexico City. [click to continue…]

Mickey Rourke’s father, an amateur body builder, left his family when the actor was six years old. Rourke himself became a trained boxer, winning his first match at the age of 12. By the age of 17, Rourke was 140 pounds and sparring with the likes of Luis Rodriguez. But two serious concussions sent Rourke into an early retirement – and a shining career in Hollywood.

OK, I’ll admit to you right now, I love this album. With the instantly recognisable ‘Because I Love You’ giving you an entry point, hearing the acoustic driven relentlessness of ‘Rio De Camero’, the hypnotic rhythm and guitar solo of ‘Michael’, or the pulse of the bass intro of ‘Easy To Lie’ for the first time can be something of a revelation. “I never knew they played progressive rock”, have been comments made to me.
Big history behind this album. Having relocated to England, there was big interest over there on its release. Unfortunately the band was in Australia and it took six weeks by boat to get back. By that time, it was too late. What could have been!
The best 60s progressive hard rock album released. 5/5 Kevin Bull

You know those concerts you envisage in your head for years, creating every detail of how incredible it would be to see that band perform live? Well, this was one of those nights for many people in attendance.

With the changes made overnight (Australian time) it looks like Twitter is making a play for better search rankings for its user’s profiles. The seemingly innocuous change of putting your name (username) on Twitter, in my case it’s Mathew Packer (matpacker) on Twitter, will influence your twitter profile’s ranking in search results. If you currently have a website / blog that ranks first for your name that might be about to change. [click to continue…]
Dear MZSPRA
Thank you for making my drive to work this morning just that much more enjoyable. I really enjoyed our little game of overtake / undertake, but I still don’t entirely understand why you got so mad at me and beeped your horn and stuck your finger up.
Was it because when you went past me over a turning lane and double lines that you didn’t use your indicator, and then when I went past you in an actual dual-lane area I used mine? [click to continue…]
I’ve pretty well finished the build for the brand new Newcastle Coffee Mornings website. There’s still a couple of little tweaks and things to get done, and if time’s on my side in the next couple of days I’ll get them out of the way.
The whole idea for Newcastle Coffee Mornings came from a fellow Novocastrian on twitter, TheMarketerAus.
The basics of Newcastle Coffee Mornings is that a bunch of us local twitter’s together for a coffee and a chat each Friday morning at 8am down at Baristaba Expresso Cafe in the Honeysuckle Precinct (the little cafe behind Silo). There’s no agendas or anything formal, just good coffee and lots of talk.
If you’re a member of twitter already and you’re somewhere near Newcastle then add newcastlecoffee to your friends and come along one Friday. If you’re not a member of twitter, then sign up now and start tweeting.
And hey, don’t forget to add me on twitter too matpacker

Due to shocking weather and torrential rain, I unfortunately missed tonight’s opener Jez Mead.
The Waif’s though were certainly welcomed by a full house at The Civic Theatre. The Waifs have played an enormous amount of shows throughout their history as a band, and it shows. [click to continue…]
