What do you call a Canon 5D out in the rain?

by Mat on November 30, 2008

Head Of State

A Canon Fried D! Get it!

Yesterday I went out to Newcastle Uni for the annual Beach Party do, and it rained like a mo-fo. It had been raining on and off all day, and I was really trying my hardest not to go out there but I hadn’t seen two of my favourite local bands in a while so I figured I would brave it and use the comp ticket anyway.

First up was Head Of State, my mates band, and the weather was holding out well enough with only a couple of little showers before they went on. Head Of States set was probably their best I’ve ever seen, the boys were on fire cranking out a couple of newer songs along with a few of the better known ones. And to mix it up they played a cover of Purple Rain, so so very different to the original and actually really rock.

Anyway here’s a bunch of photos I shot of the boys during their set……before Here Come The Birds (photos coming later on), and the downpour that drowned my Canon 5D.

Apple’s Black Friday deals

by Mat on November 28, 2008

I’m not sure exactly what I was expecting from Apple, but I can’t help feel a little disappointed after I woke up this morning and saw the ‘one day only sale’ prices up on Apple Australia. Maybe I just fell into the hype trap that’s been buzzing around the internet the last couple of days, ie. ‘omg black friday dealz’, ‘$5 iPhonez ftw’.

Oh well, guess I’ll have to keep on keeping on with my old MacBook Pro that overheats and burns my lap after 30 odd minutes. If only the prices / savings were better I might have been able to convince the wife to let me buy a new MacBook with 4gb RAM, or maybe even an Apple TV coz I’ve been jonesing about one of those for a while now. Oh well.

It will be great meeting some of our fans and other artists on the train journey before stopping off to play in Melbourne and Sydney. All aboard…next stop PARTY CENTRAL!” Says Groove Armada

Vaudeville to win the UncharTED Comp

by Mat on November 27, 2008

vaudeville-tonymott.jpg

It’s official, local rock n roll boys Vaudeville have won the Tooheys Extra Dry uncharTED grand final! Yep we’re bias, and we love it! At least this is what we’re hoping to report to you next Thursday morning after the Tooheys Extra Dry uncharTED grand final.

For now you’ll just have to read the proper information about the competition below.

It’s official! Vaudeville from Newcastle and Kate Bradley & The Goodbye Horses from Brisbane have come out top of our voting pools and will play live at the Tooheys Extra Dry uncharTED grand final, where one lucky band will be transported straight to the stage on the Big Day Out 2009 Tour! The two finalist bands have made it to the top spot, beating off thousands of bands that have been featured on uncharted.com.au over the past six weeks.

The grand final will be held on Wednesday 3rd December at The Oxford Arts Factory in Sydney from 7pm. The event will feature a special performance from Big Day Out performers Sparkadia and be hosted by Nova’s Tim ORosso’ Ross and MTV’s Ruby Rose.

A showcase of the finalist bands rehearsing for the live grand final and the final itself will be aired on MTV Australia on 20th November 2008 (for showcase) and 12th December 2008 (grand final).

Brisbane outfit Kate Bradley & The Goodbye Horses are still in shock having been picked as the My Space media pick. Previous performances have seen them perform at the coveted South By South West Festival (SXSW) in Texas and she is determined to conquer Big Day Out!

Four-piece Vaudeville are from Newcastle and came top of the public pool of bands. They have been on the road rehearsing their show, in anticipation of winning the performance of a lifetime – the Big Day Out 2009 Tour!

Ken West from the Big Day Out comments, “We are really impressed with the two finalists that the public have voted through. I’m looking forward to seeing how they stand up as live performers at the grand final!”

Satyricon, Norway metal on tour

by Mat on November 27, 2008

satyricon.jpgNorway’s Satyricon are a rare exception to the Black Metal norm – they never cared for trends in how one is supposed to present oneself and abhorred the tried and tested genre stereotypes.

What became apparent on previous album Now, Diabolical is now a dark truth on new album The Age Of Nero, their second through Roadrunner Records.

Largely written in a remote cabin deep in the Norwegian woods, the guitars have been seriously downtuned, adding to the raw power of the sound. The Age of Nero is metal in its most mature form – not as simple escapism or a form of anger management, but as a profound experience of what it’s like to live in the increasingly dark age ours has become.

Satyr, the driving force behind the band, never made a secret out of his plan to turn Satyricon into more than just the darlings of a subculture. They strip away all ambiguous metaphors developing a refined sense for sombre, great melody lines and precise, overwhelming rhythmic structures courtesy of drum legend Frost.

And Satyricon’s venomous appeal is only apt to get stronger as they officially announce their triumphant return to Australia in March 2009!

With one of the most infamous and beguiling shows on offer, these shows will sell fast. Don’t miss your chance to see Norway’s most notorious metal export.
